Dan Knapp has appreciated your patronage and taken good care of your Delft Tobacco or Apothecary Jar needs for the past several years, but soon will be retiring and pursuing other interests. Therefore, OLDE VIRGINEA JAR COMPANY will undergo a transition back to the originator and artist who created the copyrighted designs for the company at its start in 1992. As of August 1, 2008, Mary Lou Simpson will resume ownership and will be most happy to accomodate any orders. These beautiful, handcrafted Delft Jars are reproductions of jars originally used in Colonial America during the 17th and 18th centuries for storing herbs, spices and leaf tobacco. Our unique, copyrighted design was inspired by several antique jars which were inscribed with the names of ports, states, plantations, families or labeled for content. These jars feature, from left to right, the Tradewinds Ship motif and the Pineapple motif.

First mentioned in the 16th century, a sea-faring colonists brought the pineapple back from the Caribbean as a strange and exotic gift, as well as a possible cash crop for the colonies. Sea captains would spear a pineapple on the iron gates of their homes, announcing to friends and neighbors that they had safely returned from sea and all were welcome. Thus, the pineapple eventually became symbolic of hospitality.

Available in blue or polychrome (multicolored) and in four sizes that are listed below (measurement is from the base of the jar to the top of the finial), the manufacturing predates the 17th century, and the decoration has been applied by hand. The glaze will not crack and will endure for many generations. The laquered brass lid never needs polishing. Lamps are also available.

These American-made jars (with a custom-design on the bottom) have been personalized to decorate any home or office, or to commemorate a special occasion. We decorate and letter them locally in Williamsburg, Virginia. They are truly a reflection of yesteryear and a remembrance for tomorrow!!!

These reproduction Delft jars were originally designed and copyrighted (in 1992 by LIGHTFOOT MANOR SHOPPE artist and owner, Mary Lou,) with several combined ideas taken from studying antique Delft jar and tile patterns used in colonial times. PLANTATION PINEAPPLE or TRADEWINDS SHIP are both available in BLUE or POLYCHROME (multicolored). Jar comes with lacquered brass lid. Replacement lids are also available for purchase. To order, please call with the information that is printed on the bottom of your existing jar. (A seperate UPS charge applies for all lid only orders). PERSONALIZE front with up to 10 letters on either design for an additional charge per item and back for minimum charge per line. PERSONALIZED ORDERS CANNOT BE RETURNED.
